Marie Gustafson

Marie E. Gustafson, 76, died May 12.  There will be a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, at St. Cecilia Church, 5105 SW Franklin Ave., Beaverton. Recitation of the rosary will begin at 10:30 a.m.

She was born June 16, 1940, in The Dalles, the daughter of Oscar Gustafson and Ardis Kelly Gustafson. She attended St. Mary’s Academy School in The Dalles through her elementary and first two years of high school and completed her high school education at The Dalles High School.  She continued her education at Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Eugene. Her first job was at St. Vincent Hospital, then located on NW Westover Street in North Portland. Her nursing career at St Vincent Hospital spanned 40 years, beginning as a floor nurse in pediatrics and concluding as assistant to Dr. Peter Fuchs as they introduced the first Epidemiology Program on the west coast. Infection Control and Epidemiology was initiated for the purpose of looking at the infection rate in the hospital and changing policies and procedures to reduce or eliminate infections in the hospital.

After her retirement, Ms. Gustafson became a fulltime volunteer with Center for Peace West, a Medjugorje information center for the promotion and pilgrimages to the apparition site in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She made more than 30 trips to Medjugorje, many as a leader of pilgrimage groups at the apparition site.  She also was an active member and volunteer at St. Cecilia Church.

Marie is survived by her siblings, Ed (Barbara), Alice Anne, Steve and Bill (Kathy); eight nieces and nephews, Scott, Leanne, Chris, Stephanie (Nate), Adam (Natalie), Laura (Jeff), Josh (Brandi), and Emily; and three great-nieces, Maddy, Kathryn, and Rebecca.

A reception hosted by the St. Gerard Guild will be held in the Parish Center following the celebration of Mass. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 25, in The Dalles.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Gerard Guild at St. Cecilia Church, or Center of Peace West, P.O. Box 486, Beaverton, OR 97075 or Maryville Nursing Home, 14645 S.W. Farmington Rd., Beaverton, OR  97007.
