Father Joseph John Beno,93, died peacefully at the Blessing House in Tigard May 6. There will be a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Monday, May 15, at St. Wenceslaus Church in Scappoose. Burial with military honors will follow in the parish cemetery. A reception will be held in the parish center.
Father Beno was born to John and Mary (Fischer) Beno July 23, 1923, at the Beno home in Scappoose, joining his older sister Helen. He graduated from Scappoose High School in 1942, worked for two years at Bonneville Power Administration and then served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. After his discharge, he attended the University of Portland, graduating in 1950. Called to serve God, he entered Mount Angel Seminary in 1951 and completed his studies at St. Edward Seminary in 1957. Archbishop Edward Howard ordained him at St. Mary Cathedral May 18, 1957, and he said his first Mass the following day at St. Wenceslaus Church in Scappoose. He lovingly served the Archdiocese of Portland as either assistant pastor or pastor in several parishes: St. Joseph, Salem, and St. Mary, Eugene; St. Michael, Oakridge, and St. Henry, Dexter; Sacred Heart, Medford, and St. Monica, Coos Bay, until he retired in 1993. During his retirement he enjoyed substituting for his fellow priests. In 2008, because of his dementia, he moved to Blessing House.
Traveling was one of Father Beno’s passions. He was proud of his Czech heritage and he visited Czech relatives several times. A lifelong learner, he attended educational institutes and also led international pilgrimages. Always an active person he enjoyed swimming, hiking, mountain climbing, fishing, camping, bicycling and downhill skiing. He was especially fond of his sister Helen, brother-in-law Joe and their nine children, often celebrating family events with them including many baptisms and marriages. He always loved a party. Gifted with a positive outlook, one of his favorite sayings even late into his illness was “Everything is beautiful!”
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and his niece Joanie.
He is survived by his nieces and a nephew: Janice Parker, Carol Galloway, Mary Thomas, Elaine Sawyer, Geri Yost, Marge McWade, Joe Barta and DeAnne Coppenger and their families, cousins in the United States and Czech Republic, and many parishioners. With his gift of connecting and caring for others he was truly a blessing to so many people throughout his life.
His family is especially appreciative of Steve and Corrine Isom and the Blessing House staff for their loving care and support of Father Beno for more than eight years.
