MILWAUKIE — St. John the Baptist Catholic Church here has teamed up with Dr. Wally Walker, a Milwaukie optometrist, and his mission team to collect used eyeglasses that will be examined and catalogued by Pacific University students. The students and Walker’s team travel to emerging countries to provide eye exams and offer the glasses to those otherwise unable to obtain them.

Parishioner Florence Furlong was the catalyst for parish involvement in the outreach program. During May, the parish collected used eyeglasses of all kinds, including sunglasses and children’s glasses and collected more than 150 pairs for the next trip.

Walker recently returned from a successful eye care mission to the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua where volunteers saw nearly 640 patients and gave away a thousand pairs of glasses. From Belize to Africa, and other places between, the number of lives touched by this ecumenical effort reaches far beyond anything the original planners could think of.
