Regarding "Rejoin the accord," June 16, page 27:
I am, like many French citizens, an admirer of Pope Francis and I support the editorial on why America should rejoin the Paris Accord on climate change.
The international scientific community has repeatedly proven through millions of measurements around the planet that climate change threatens us all. As then-French President Jacques Chirac, a conservative, said at the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit 15 years ago: “Our house is burning and we are looking elsewhere.”
Today, there is no elsewhere.
I will never forget what your country has done for the freedom of Europe. This is why I am deeply shocked by President Trump’s decision to walk away from the climate accord that 190 other countries have signed. The decision has been unanimously condemned on this side of Atlantic by both conservatives and liberals as an insult to our common values.
How can the world look to President Trump for leadership when he appoints a climate change denier to administer your Environmental Protection Agency? It’s as if Catholic and Protestant churches each chose an atheist to lead them.
Now the rest of the world must continue fighting to give a safe planet for our children.
