I’ve written a number of entries for the Oregon Encyclopedia, almost exclusively on directly or peripherally Catholic topics. The editors asked me to write three entries, for which I was having an awful time tracking down information.
The entries languished for more than a year.
Then it hit me: the Catholic Sentinel archives. This vast database of Oregon Catholic history, online and searchable, right at my fingertips. So after all that time, it took me about an hour and a half to finish all three entries on Catholic Charities/CYO, St. John the Apostle Parish and St. Stanislaus Parish. I told my editor about the archives, and how excited I was at how useful they are. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the archives now became my chief source for future entries, or a source for many others.
