Good memory

Heather Renshaw’s excellent article “Understanding the Power of No,” (June 17, page 22) was informative, enlightening, cautionary, and telltale as well.

As a twin, I had a younger brother and two younger sisters growing up in a family with a stout-hearted Irish mother.

Commenting as an older brother to my mother about my younger brother Jim, I said: “You know, Mother, Jim is really a nice guy. He’s always pleasant and he never says ‘no.’”
To my surprise and my inferred discontinuity, my mother replied: “That’s nice to hear, Joe. Thank God he wasn’t born a girl.”
It wasn’t until quite a while a while later that I learned she did not mean that girls were always naughty saying no. Thanks for bringing up that old memory.
