SAINT BENEDICT — The monks of Mount Angel Abbey invite the public to visit them during their annual Saint Benedict Festival Saturday, July 8. Get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into their centuries’ old way of life — rooted in a rhythm of work, prayer, and silence — while enjoying an afternoon of food, music and company at the abbey.
During their third annual Saint Benedict Festival, held that day from noon to 4 p.m., the monks will be pouring tastes of three beers brewed especially for the festival. In addition, they’ll be serving their favorite Black Habit and Saint Benedict Farmhouse Ale. Festival goers will enjoy an outdoor picnic featuring Swiss-German cuisine, live jazz music, local wines, and the monk’s own Benedictine Brewery beers. Tickets are on sale now.
Festival visitors can mingle with monks working in a mini-Scriptorium or carving candles made at the abbey, play a round of bocce ball or Jenga with the Abbey’s junior monks, and take tours that highlight the Swiss traditions that endure at the Abbey. The silent auction features experiences with the monks, including catered dinners, hiking in the Columbia Gorge and a private music performance.
Tickets are $50 per person (adults only, 21 and over) and include the catered picnic, two glasses of either Benedictine Brewery beer or local Willlamette Valley wine, a festival logo glass, and all activities. Ticket pre-purchase is recommended. Free parking with shuttle service to the Abbey lawn is provided. For information, call 503-845-3030 or see www.mountangelabbey.org/sbf-2017. Proceeds support Mount Angel Abbey’s monastery, library and guesthouse.
Mount Angel Abbey is a Benedictine community founded in 1882 from the Abbey of Engelberg in Switzerland. They maintain a monastic tradition that has been a vital part of the Roman Catholic Church for more than 1,500 years. The monks, a community of 50 men ranging in age from 20 to 91, spend their lives in prayer and work. In addition to the monastery, the abbey includes Mount Angel Seminary, a retreat house, library, and pastoral ministry. To learn more, visit www.mountangelabbey.org.
