Gerry Lewin, longtime photojournalist in Salem and for the Catholic Sentinel, spoke this spring at the Willamette Heritage Center. Lewin, being honored for his contributions to public life in Salem, has donated his prints to the historic preservation organization. His photos of Oregon politics, daily life and tragedy won awards and often were gained through Herculean effort. “If it is impossible, just ask me to do it,” he often said. Lewin traveled to the Vatican to take photos of Oregon archbishops, and former archbishops like Cardinal William Levada. He somehow was able to take close-up shots without disturbing rites.
